NTCIR-9 runs seven tasks:
Intent (INTENT), Recognizing Inference in TExt (RITE), Geotemporal Information Retrieval (GeoTime), IR for Spoken Documents (SpokenDoc), Cross-Lingual Link Discovery (CrossLink), Interactive Visual Exploration (Vis-Ex) and Patent Machine Translation (PatentMT)

Hideo Joho and I are working as the evaluation co-chairs of NTCIR-9.

Also, I am one of the task organisers of
INTENT and One Click Access (1CLICK) which is officially a subtask of INTENT but actually more like a separate task.

INTENT Subtasks:
Subtopic Mining - given a query, list up possible intents;
Document Ranking - selectively diversify search results to cover different intents
1CLICK - return a fixed length text that immediately satisfies the user

We have started distributing the first call for participation for INTENT and 1CLICK.
Please visit the above pages and consider participating.

If you are interested in any of the NTCIR-9 tasks,
please note that the task participant registration closes on December 20, 2010.

The NTCIR-9 final meeting will take place December 6-9, 2011 at NII, Tokyo, Japan.

The Asia Information Retrieval Societies Conference (AIRS) aims to bring together
researchers and developers to exchange new ideas and latest achievements in the
field of information retrieval (IR). The scope of the conference covers

in text, audio, image, video, and multimedia data. The AIRS 2010 welcomes
submissions of original papers in the broad field of information retrieval.

The AIRS 2010 proceedings will be published as an LNCS volume, so please follow

In addition, please anonymize your paper to facilitate blind reviewing,
and make sure your paper is no longer than 12 pages in the LNCS format.
Submissions that do not follow these guidelines will be rejected unconditionally.

to another conference at the same time) are strictly forbidden; if

NTCIR-9 "Shoten" Task?

NTCIR-8 Community QA Pilot Taskというもののオーガナイザ兼参加者になった関係で、Yahoo!知恵袋のデータを眺めたりしているのだが、例えば

Q: 世界は僕中心に回っていますか？
Best Answer: いいえ私を中心に回っています。<以下略>

のように、Qの有用性が低かったり、質問者が選んだbest answerがゴミだったりすることが結構多い。そこで上記タスクでは、best answerによるシステム評価とは別に、4人の判定者に各回答の質をなるべく客観的に絶対評価してもらったデータによるシステム評価も行うことにしている。

ときに、NTCIRでは「メディアで話題になるような」タスクが求められていると聞く。研究のmotivationがそんなんでいいのか！？というつっこみはさておき、とりあえず「笑点タスク」なんてどうでしょう。つまり、歌丸師匠が誰に座布団をあげるかを推定するタスク。過去の座布団獲得枚数からauthorityを計算したりして。テレビ受けするんじゃないかな。でもこのタスク、外人にどう説明すればよいのだ。

でもUGCっておもしろいね。NTCIR-9ではMOATあたりと連携して、Community QA Taskをもっと盛り上げよう。

In recognition of the need for a forum dedicated to the intensive
discussion of evaluation issues, we have held two successful

CLEF 2010 - Conference on Multilingual and Multimodal Information Access Evaluation

Background

CLEF2010 is the continuation of the popular CLEF campaigns that have run for the past ten years. It will cover a broad range of issues in the fields of multilingual and multimodal information access evaluation. It will consist of two main parts: a peer-reviewed conference (20-21
September) on experimental evaluation, which will innovate the CLEF tradition, and a series of labs (22-23 September), which will continue the CLEF tradition of community-based evaluation and discussion on evaluation issues.

Aim and Scope

The CLEF2010 conference aims at advancing the evaluation of complex multimodal and multilingual information systems in order to support individuals, organizations, and communities who design, develop, employ, and improve such systems.

The growth of the Internet has been exponential with respect to the number of users, media, and languages used regularly for global information dissemination. Language and media barriers are no longer seen as inviolable and they are constantly crossed and mixed to provide content that can be accessed on a global scale within a multicultural and multilingual setting.

Users need to be able to co-operate and communicate across language and media boundaries, going beyond separate search in diverse media/languages and exploiting interactions between different languages and media.

Experimental evaluation - both laboratory and interactive - is a key to fostering the development of multilingual and multimodal information systems that address increasingly complex information needs.

The CLEF2010 labs will continue the CLEF tradition of community-based benchmarking and will complement these with workshops on emerging issues in evaluation methodology. Lab proposals were sollicited at an earlier stage and and the 2010 lab program can be found at http://www.clef2010.org/.

At this time we invite submissions for presentation at the CLEF2010 conference. We welcome submissions on all aspects of multilingual and multimodal information access evaluation. All submissions will be reviewed on the basis of relevance, originality, importance, and clarity.

The conference proceedings will be published in the Springer Lecture Notes in Computer Science (LNCS) series.

Topics for Discussion

Relevant topics for the CLEF 2010 include, but are not limited to:

- Novel methodologies for the design of evaluation tasks, especially user-centric ones;
- Analysis of the impact of multilingual/multicultural/multimodal
differences in interface and search design;
- Assessing multilinguality and multimodality in relevant application communities, e.g. digital libraries, intellectual property, medical, music, video, and social media.
- Alternative methods for improving and automating ground-truth creation, for example crowd-sourcing or clicklog-based;
- Prediction of success and satisfaction rates;
- Task-oriented metrics of success and failure;
- Evaluation of technology vs testing of scientific theories;
- Innovative and easy to communicate techniques for analysing the experimental results, including statistical analyses, data mining, and information visualization;
- Alternatives for and comparison of item-based, list-based, set-based, and session-based evaluation;
- Simulation (of queries, sessions, users) and information retrieval;
- Infrastructures for bringing automation and collaboration in the evaluation process;
- Component-based evaluation approaches;
- Evaluation and analysis using private or anonymized test data;
- Living laboraties and evaluating live systems.

- Notification of Acceptance: 11 June 2010
- Camera Ready: 25 June 2010
- Conference: 20-21 September 2010.

Format

Authors are invited to submit electronically original papers, which have not been published and are not under consideration elsewhere, using the LNCS proceedings format (http://www.springer.com/computer/lncs?SGWID=0-164-7-72376-0).

Two types of papers are solicited:
- long papers: 12 pages max;
- short papers: 6 pages max.

Papers will be peer-reviewed by at least 3 members of the program committee. Selection will be based on originality, clarity, and technical quality.

Information Access technologies provide the interface between
human information needs and digital information resources. The
reliable evaluation of these technologies has long been
recognized as central to technological development in the field.
As information retrieval becomes more pervasive, the forms of
retrieval more diverse, and retrieval tools richer, the
importance of effective, efficient, and innovative evaluation
grows as well.

In recognition of the need for a forum dedicated to the intensive
discussion of evaluation issues, we have held two successful
International Workshops on Evaluating Information Access (EVIA
2007 and 2008). Proceedings and reports can be found below:

Following these successes, we are happy to announce the Third
International Workshop on Evaluating Information Access (EVIA
2010), to be held on June 15, 2010 (coinciding with Day 1 of the
NTCIR-8 Workshop Meeting) at the National Institute of
Informatics (NII), Tokyo, Japan. We invite papers addressing one
or more of the following topics:

- Test collection formation, evaluation metrics, and evaluation
environments
- Statistical issues in retrieval evaluation
- User studies and the evaluation of human-computer interaction
in information retrieval (HCIR)
- Evaluation methods for multilingual, multimedia, or mobile
information access
- Novel information access tasks and their evaluation
- Evaluation and assessment using implicit user feedback,
crowdsourcing, living labs, or inferential methods
- Evaluation issues in industrial and enterprise retrieval
systems

Submissions will be subject to double-blind reviewing. Accepted
papers will be included in the EVIA 2010 online proceedings, and
summarized in a report to SIGIR Forum.

We invite submissions of regular papers (up to 9 pages) and
short papers (up to 5 pages).
Submitted papers should be in the ACM Conference style
(for LaTeX, use the "Option 2" style) and must be submitted
as pdf files. Templates are available at:

隠喩の名詞句“AのB”を対象とした隠喩辞書を独自で構築し，その辞書との比較
を行うことで隠喩の名詞句“AのB”の意味解析を行う．

“えもにゅ”における短文の感情推定について

テーマ：不均質なライフログからのデータマイニングおよび一般

【趣旨】

現在、人々の実生活の中で発生する購買履歴、移動履歴等のデータや、写真
共有サイトやブログ・SNS等のソーシャルメディアに書き込まれるデータ等、
多種多様なデータが膨大なライフログとして蓄積されつつあります。こうし
た中で、これらのライフログの中から有用な知識を発見し活用することがホッ
トな研究テーマとなっております。

しかし、これらのライフログデータは一般に、多言語、マルチメディアの不
均質なデータであり、このようなデータを対象とするデータマイニングは困
難な課題となっております。そこで、電子情報通信学会LOIS研究会と、情報
処理学会DD研究会とFI研究会が共同で、このような課題に関する研究会を企
画しました。関連する研究者の方、ご発表を検討くださいますようお願い致
します。

なお、上記以外の一般発表も通常通り募集いたします。自然言語処理・情報
学基礎に関する幅広いご発表をお待ちしています。

Information Access technologies provide the interface between
human information needs and digital information resources. The
reliable evaluation of these technologies has been recognized for
decades as central to the advancement of the field. As information
retrieval becomes more pervasive, the forms of retrieval
more diverse, and retrieval tools richer, the importance of
effective, efficient, and innovative evaluation grows as well.
In recognition of the need for a forum dedicated to the intensive
discussion of evaluation issues, we have held two successful
International Workshops on Evaluating Information Access (EVIA
2007 and 2008). Proceedings and reports can be found below:

Following these successes, we are happy to announce the Third
International Workshop on Evaluating Information Access (EVIA
2010) on June 15, 2010 (coinciding with Day 1 of the NTCIR-8
Workshop Meeting) at the National Institute of Informatics (NII),
Tokyo, Japan. We invite papers addressing one or more of the
following topics:

- Test collection formation, evaluation metrics, and evaluation
environments
- Statistical issues in retrieval evaluation
- User studies and the evaluation of human-computer interaction
in information retrieval (HCIR)
- Evaluation methods for multilingual, multimedia, or mobile
information access
- Novel information access tasks and their evaluation
- Evaluation and assessment using implicit user feedback,
crowdsourcing, living labs, or inferential methods
- Evaluation issues in industrial and enterprise retrieval
systems

Submissions will be subject to double-blind reviewing. Accepted
papers will be included in the EVIA 2010 online proceedings, and
summarized in a report to SIGIR Forum.

We invite submissions of regular papers (up to 9 pages) and

The ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) is the
major international research forum focused on digital libraries and
associated technical, practical, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the
many meanings of the term "digital libraries", including (but not
limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational
information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of
selecting, collecting, organizing, distributing, and evaluating digital
content; and theoretical models of information media, including document
genres and electronic publishing. Digital libraries are distinguished
from information retrieval systems because they include more types of
media, provide additional functionality and services, and include other
stages of the information life cycle, from creation through use. Digital
libraries can also be viewed as an extension of the services libraries
currently provide.

The theme of JCDL 2010 is "Digital Libraries - 10 years past, 10 years
forward, a 2020 vision-". This theme reflects the fact that the context
in which digital libraries were originally conceived has significantly
changed in the context of new information models embodied in Web 2.0 and
popular social networking applications. In this spirit, we are
especially interested in papers that address and demonstrate new models
of collaborative, participatory information interaction increasingly
ubiquitous in the Web 2.0 context.

JCDL 2010 invites submissions of papers and proposals for posters,
demonstrations, tutorials, and workshops that will make the conference
an exciting and creative event to attend. As always, the conference
welcomes contributions from all the fields that intersect to enable
Digital Libraries. Topics include, but are not limited to:

- Collaborative and participatory information environments

- Cyberinfrastructure architectures, applications, and deployments

- Data mining/extraction of structure from networked information

- Digital library and Web Science curriculum development

We are now forming a PC.
Though the review period is very short,
each submission will be carefully reviewed by
at least three PC members.
A preliminary CFP will be distributed soon.

AIRS 2010 (hosted by National Taiwan University, Taipei)
will probably take place in December 2010,
to avoid conflicts with other IR/NLP conferences.

A couple of NEW IR conferences:
CLEF is no longer just a "European TREC" - CLEF 2010 is a conference.
IRF is also launching a new conference.

So many conferences.
I hope there won't be a SIGIR workshop on evaluation this year.

Some updates.

- William Webber, Mark Sanderson and I have started
discussing EVIA 2010 (June 15, 2010, NII, Tokyo).
Will form a Program Committee soon.

- The next AIRS is going to be a full CONFERENCE rather than a symposium:
Asia Information Retrieval Societies (AIRS) conference.
AIRS 2010 will be hosted by National Taiwan University, Taipei.

- IPSJ SIG-IFAT (information fundamentals and access technologies)
will be one of the "AIR societies" mentioned above.
The IFAT membership fee for next year is going to be 3,150JPY.
(Up 210JPY from this year, but still it's very cheap!)

Four invited speakers, two from academia and two from industry,
will discuss the future of information access.

This is the banquet venue which we will visit on Oct 22.

The success of TREC, CLEF, and NTCIR has clearly established the importance of building reusable, large-scale standard test collections in
Information Access research. The aim of FIRE is to encourage
research in Indian language Information Access by creating
a similar platform for Indian languages that provides
the data and a common forum for comparing models and
techniques.

The Tasks:
==========
1) Ad-hoc monolingual document retrieval in Bengali, Hindi and Marathi.

2) Ad-hoc cross-lingual document retrieval
- documents in Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, and English,
- queries in Bengali, Hindi, Marathi, Tamil, Telugu and English.
- Bengali and Hindi topics will also be transliterated and made
available in Roman script. Adhoc monolingual task participants
are encouraged to submit runs using these queries as well.

3) Retrieval and classification from mailing lists and forums.
This is a pilot task being offered by IBM India Research Lab.

4) Ad-hoc Wikipedia-entity retrieval from news documents
- Entities mined from English Wikipedia
- Query documents from English news website
This is a pilot task being offered by Yahoo! Labs, Bangalore.

History
The RIAO conference is a triennial conference, which addresses research
topics related to the design of robust and large-scale scientific
and industrial solutions to information processing.
Previous RIAO editions were held at Grenoble (1985), MIT (1988), Barcelona
(1991), Rockefeller University (1994), Montreal (1997), Paris (2000),
and Avignon (2004), and Carnegie Mellon University (2007).
Past RIAO conferences were constituted by both peer-reviewed scientific
sessions and demonstrations of innovative industrial applications and
advanced research prototypes.

Scope of RIAO 2010
Submissions are invited which present recent, original and unpublished
research on the theme of RIAO 2010: adapting, personalizing and merging
heterogeneous information.

Paper Submission

We welcome submissions from both research and industrial communities
addressing the main conference theme.
Submitted papers must describe an unpublished original work, emphasizing
completed or advanced research, possibly with releted experiments.
A parallel submission to other venues should be clearly indicated to the
program committee.
The submissions (which have to be blind) will be reviewed by at least
three program committee members. The submissions will be evaluated on
the basis of
originality, relevance, technical quality, and presentation.
Papers can be submitted in two categories: full papers and short papers,
where full papers are appropriate for describing
substantial research with related evaluations and short papers will
typically describe ongoing research and preliminary results. All
accepted papers in both categories will be published in the conference
proceedings. At the conference, full papers will be presented as a talk
and short papers will be presented as a poster.
Long papers must not exceed 12 pages (5000 words), in one column format,
starting with an abstract.
Short papers must not exceed 6 pages (2500 words), in one column,
starting with an abstract.
Submissions should be in Microsoft Word format or in PDF.

The conference proceedings will be available to conference attendees,
and through the CID after the conference.

EVIA 2010 will take place probably on Day 1 of NTCIR-8 (June 15-18, 2010, NII, Tokyo, Japan). In addition to Mark Sanderson and myself, we have a new chair, William Webber of Melbourne, Australia. Enjoy his research blog.
I'm sure he will do all the work and let Mark and I retire.

Attended the IRJ editorial board lunch meeting.
Presented a poster at the reception in the evening.

Sue Dumais is the second MSR researcher to receive the Salton Award. (The first is Steve Robertson.)

She's saying that, while documents have kept growing in size and diversity, the query input interface has not changed. Basically no progress here.

Google's paper: good abandonment = user finds the answer in the first result page. The comparison across US/Japan/China is interesting.

Now I'm in Redmond.
The immigration officer at San Francisco Airport
was puzzled to see a Japanese guy
emerge from a plane from Beijing,
wearing an Ichiro T-shirt.
When I told him I work for Microsoft Researh Asia,
he (an XP user) instantly complained about Vista.
Of course I told him to wait for Windows 7.
But we really should listen to what he said:
"You change things too often!"

The customer is god.

Note that Haruo Minami the singer never said this.
what he actually meant was "The audience is god".

A memorandum from my twelve-hour flight from Beijing to San Francisco:
A fourteen-year-old Chinese girl, avid fan of Japanese comic books,
especially Death Note, sat next to me. I hope she will become a manga artist
some day and make her dreams come true.
