Preliminary CFP: EVIA 2010

***** Preliminary CALL FOR PAPERS *****

The Third International Workshop on Evaluating Information Access
(EVIA 2010), a Satellite Workshop of NTCIR-8
http://research.nii.ac.jp/ntcir/ntcir-ws8/EVIA-2010/

June 15, 2010 at NII, Tokyo, Japan.
***************************************

Information Access technologies provide the interface between
human information needs and digital information resources. The
reliable evaluation of these technologies has been recognized for
decades as central to the advancement of the field. As information
retrieval becomes more pervasive, the forms of retrieval
more diverse, and retrieval tools richer, the importance of
effective, efficient, and innovative evaluation grows as well.
In recognition of the need for a forum dedicated to the intensive
discussion of evaluation issues, we have held two successful
International Workshops on Evaluating Information Access (EVIA
2007 and 2008). Proceedings and reports can be found below:

EVIA 2007 online proceedings:

Invited Talk at IUCS 2009 tomorrow

I'm in Japan for the 100th time this year.
Tomorrow - talk at the conference, and then get drunk with some Microsoft colleagues. (Or is it the other way round?)
I don't blog too often but I do tweet at the office.
Both are blocked by the Great Wall in China.
So my blog entries tend to be travelogues posted from outside China these days.

Three Screens And A Cloud

This is a song I wrote for the MSRA Band.

Three Screens and a Cloud

Words and Music by Tetsuya Sakai

Woke up to find a brand new day
There's something in the air
Like an electronic message from above

Now I can see The Road Ahead
Clear as the Beijing sky
See all the Windows are open to show me the cloud

And I feel like talking to the cloud
With my mobile devices
I rely on the wisdom of the crowd
It's the power of our voices

Wherever I go I'm online
With my machines and my friends
When I'm alone they always back me up

I'm growing wings to touch the sun
I feel so light and free
All of my data and services are in the cloud

And I feel like walking through the screens
Of my TVs and PCs
Come on take me to places I've never been
Show me skies, mountains and seas

And I feel like talking to the cloud
With my mobile devices
And I feel like walking through the screens
Of my TVs and PCs
Come on take me three screens and a cloud
Show me skies, mountains and seas

CFP: JCDL 2010 (right after EVIA 2010 / NTCIR-8)

Call for Papers

Joint Conference on Digital Libraries JCDL 2010

June 21-25, 2010 Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia.

http://www.jcdl2010.org

Sponsored by ACM SIGIR, ACM SIGWEB, ASIS&T, and IEEE-CS TCDL

The ACM/IEEE-CS Joint Conference on Digital Libraries (JCDL) is the
major international research forum focused on digital libraries and
associated technical, practical, and social issues. JCDL encompasses the
many meanings of the term "digital libraries", including (but not
limited to) new forms of information institutions; operational
information systems with all manner of digital content; new means of
selecting, collecting, organizing, distributing, and evaluating digital
content; and theoretical models of information media, including document
genres and electronic publishing. Digital libraries are distinguished
from information retrieval systems because they include more types of
media, provide additional functionality and services, and include other
stages of the information life cycle, from creation through use. Digital
libraries can also be viewed as an extension of the services libraries
currently provide.

The theme of JCDL 2010 is "Digital Libraries - 10 years past, 10 years
forward, a 2020 vision-". This theme reflects the fact that the context
in which digital libraries were originally conceived has significantly
changed in the context of new information models embodied in Web 2.0 and
popular social networking applications. In this spirit, we are
especially interested in papers that address and demonstrate new models
of collaborative, participatory information interaction increasingly
ubiquitous in the Web 2.0 context.

JCDL 2010 invites submissions of papers and proposals for posters,
demonstrations, tutorials, and workshops that will make the conference
an exciting and creative event to attend. As always, the conference
welcomes contributions from all the fields that intersect to enable
Digital Libraries. Topics include, but are not limited to:

- Collaborative and participatory information environments

- Cyberinfrastructure architectures, applications, and deployments

- Data mining/extraction of structure from networked information

- Digital library and Web Science curriculum development

- Evaluation of online information environments

- Impact and evaluation of digital information in education

- Information policy and copyright law

- Personal digital information management

- Retrieval and browsing

- Social networks and networked information

- Social-technical perspectives of digital information

- Studies of human factors in networked information

- Systems, algorithms, and models for data preservation

- Theoretical models of information interaction and organization

- Visualization of large-scale information environments

Important Dates

All papers are due Monday, January 25, 2010 at 5 PM EST.

Demonstration submissions are due Monday, Feb 1, 2010 at 5 PM EST.

We are now forming a PC.
Though the review period is very short,
each submission will be carefully reviewed by
at least three PC members.
A preliminary CFP will be distributed soon.

AIRS 2010 (hosted by National Taiwan University, Taipei)
will probably take place in December 2010,
to avoid conflicts with other IR/NLP conferences.

A couple of NEW IR conferences:
CLEF is no longer just a "European TREC" - CLEF 2010 is a conference.
IRF is also launching a new conference.

So many conferences.
I hope there won't be a SIGIR workshop on evaluation this year.

MSR Japan

Prof Kurohashi introducing the Science Cafe@Kyoto University (Nov 6)

MSR New England has only 10 researchers.
So if we gather 10 Japanese researchers at MSRA,
maybe we can form MSR Japan.
(We now have three: Yasuyuki Matsushita, Tetsuya Sakai
and Yuki Arase who will join us next April.)

EVIA2010, AIRS2010, IPSJ SIG-IFAT...

Some updates.

- William Webber, Mark Sanderson and I have started
discussing EVIA 2010 (June 15, 2010, NII, Tokyo).
Will form a Program Committee soon.

- The next AIRS is going to be a full CONFERENCE rather than a symposium:
Asia Information Retrieval Societies (AIRS) conference.
AIRS 2010 will be hosted by National Taiwan University, Taipei.

- IPSJ SIG-IFAT (information fundamentals and access technologies)
will be one of the "AIR societies" mentioned above.
The IFAT membership fee for next year is going to be 3,150JPY.
(Up 210JPY from this year, but still it's very cheap!)
Please join IFAT!

Otaru, or Failure to Capture the Underlying Information Needs

MY QUESTION:
Is there a convenience store near here?
HOTEL CLERK:
No, there isn't.

(But it turns out that there is a supermarket
inside the hotel complex. I bought a bottle of water there.
That was all I wanted. Why didn't she mention the supermarket?)

MY QUESTION:
How do I get to the Tengu Mountain Ropeway?
LADY AT TRAIN STATION INFO DESK:
Please take a bus at Platform #3.

(But it turns out that there are two Platform #3's.
Why didn't she tell me?
We nearly took the wrong bus.)

MY QUESTION:
Can we get a tax refund for this later at the airport?
LADY AT A GLASSWARE SHOP:
You can get it here.
MY QUESTION:
But can we get it later at the airport?
LADY AT A GLASSWARE SHOP:
You can get it here.
MY QUESTION:
(Are you one of those stupid AI systems from the seventies?)

This was my third visit to Otaru. Fourth? No thanks.
But we had good food and took good pictures.

AIRS 2009 Day 3 (Boys Be Ambitious)

Liz and Chin-Yew

"Excellent luck" for me, thank you.

Thanks again to Prof Masaharu Yoshioka and Prof Takuya Kida -
they've done an incredible job as local organisers.

And so AIRS 2009 is over.

AIRS 2009 Day 2

Jeffrey Paul's talk on mobile application marketplace.

Banquet: Excellent food!
Please browse on and regret that you didn't come to AIRS 2009.

The best paper award (the first ever at AIRS) was given
to Falk Scholer and Andrew Turpin.
The paper was selected because Falk's slides contained
zombies.

(Dear students - This is a joke by the way. A zombie in your
presentation usually does not get you a best paper award.)
